Dr David Boothman / Waff
Drug Overdose killed prominent cancer researcher.

Dr. David Boothman died after a nurse at the Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis mistakenly administered a massive dose of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid nearly 100 time stronger than morphine, instead of a benign hydrating solution as he recovered from a stroke.

The 61-year-old molecular biologist’s death on Nov. 1, 2019, came a week after the medication error. The fentanyl depressed his blood pressure, causing brain damage that pushed Boothman into an irreversible coma. An autopsy revealed he died from respiratory failure following the fentanyl overdose. The coroner ruled his death an accident. -indystar / Medscape

Who needs a second opinion? Not all medical or surgical cases will need a second opinion. If you have obvious signs of an acute condition like appendicitis, or symptoms of painful acute abdomen like ruptured stomach, bowel, or gall bladder etc., you won’t need a second opinion at most times, when physical exams and labs results almost always jive well to support the acute diagnosis. And if you are in a tertiary level hospital, your surgeon actually works with a team, and you likely already have additional other medical opinions from in-house team of experts.

Second or third opinions are beneficial when the condition is complicated that your doctor is giving you multiple options and cannot give a solid assurance on any of the options. Complicated cases like advance cancers with other co-existent health issues like uncontrolled diabetes, recent heart attack or hypertension etc.,are usually a challenge, and need experienced experts’ opinions. Back pains is one of the conditions that calls for second opinions especially before subjecting yourself to surgery, when 75 percents of cases are non-surgical.
We work with our network of associates, experts/ subspecialists including non-affiliates experts, for second opinions services. Our affiliate medical experts and lab specialists are remarkable professionals whose dedication to their patients place them as the best and most trusted providers in their disciplines.
